8th Grade Life Science

Week 35

Date Objective/ Procedure Handouts/ Labs Homework
5/13

 Learning/Memory

1.Attempt a series of tasks in succession: visualizing, listening to sounds in the room, tapping fingers in specific order, counting backwards by 7's, recalling an event from the past, pinching self to use a good portion of the brain and then discuss what parts of the brain were used to perform these tasks

2. Discuss memory & first hand experiences- take notes:
Learning: The process of acquiring new knowledge and skills
Memory:
The process of retrieving knowledge and bits of information related to skills that are stored in the brain

Learning & Memory: video

Best When there is:
Active 1st hand Experience
Using Multiple Senses
Emotional Engagement

3.  Science Journal: Students will explain the steps they took when they first learned how to write the alphabet, rode a bike or tied their shoes

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5

5/14

Mirror Writing

1. Practice Mirror Writing to understand that the brain can be trained to learn a new way of doing things

2. Science Journal: Reading FOSS Brain & Senses: Learning & Memory, Helen Keller p. 23-27 answer discussion questions

3. Science Journal: Accident Report & Recall questions- students will observe an accident and then recall the events followed by a class discussion about which aspects of the event were the easiest to remember and why and how the brain can create false memories

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5

26. Mirror Writing/Mnemonics: Memory Helpers

5/15

Virtual Cow Eye Dissection-1

1. Prepare for the cow eye dissection with this virtual cow eye dissection cow eye dissection website,  Foss Brain & Senses &

Virtual Cow Eye Dissection

2. Define and label the parts of the eye: sclera, cornea, aqueous humor, pupil, lens, vitreous humor, retina, tapetum, iris, optic nerve, blind spot

3.  Science Journal- explain what the tapetum is and why humans don't  have this structure

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5

47. Eye Dissection/Eye Diagram

5/16

Memory Tests

1. Continue Mirror Writing to understand that the brain can be trained to learn a new way of doing things

2. Science Journal: Memory Tests 1-5  and identify what type of learner the tests showed they are

3. Discover how individuals learn best through a series of memory tests

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5

5/17

Mnemonics & Associations

1. . Science Journal: Memory Tests A & B and identify what type of learner the tests showed they are

2. Take notes and discuss Association & Mnemonics and how they help improve memory and learning

Association: when something reminds you of something else it is easier to remember

Mnemonic Devices: Memory helpers that use a phrase, word, acronym or song to help someone remember something

3. Science Journal: Explain how they normally prepare for tests and then after they found out what type of learner they are- how will they can better prepare for tests in the future

NJCCCS 5.1  & 5.5

Come up with a mnemonic device to help you remember the 3 aspects on how people learn & remember best
